Don't Waste Let's Compost!

It is known that the foods wasted and thrown into rubbish cause the greenhouse effect which increases global warming. There is no planet B for the human-beings, so the time is up to take action for our environment.

The Workshop of Bokashi Compost

Our Turkish partner school held a workshop and made Bokashi compost by using leftovers, scrabs of waste foods in their kitchen. Through Bokashi compost, they transformed waste foods into organic fertilizers for soil by fermentation. Via of Bokashi compost method; organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphate and all trace minerals enrich soil, allowing more plants to grow and more carbon dioxide to be drawn from the atmosphere.

The Steps of Bokashi Compost

You can use all sorts of leftovers but they shouldn't be rotten or decayed. To start Bokashi compost, it is crucial to prepare Beneficial Microorganism Mix (Lactoserum) beforehand. The detailed explanation of it can be reached from the link https://youtu.be/iQ6_8f1jBEM

You can cut the leftover foods into small pieces which is not necessary, but it makes fermentation process fast.

You need a thermos bottle and cartoon papers which balance humidity during fermentation process. At the bottom of thermos bottle, you put cartoon papers first.

After putting cartoon papers at the bottom, you add waste foods & scrabs and press them to decrease their contact with air.

After adding waste foods, you again put cartoon papers and spray lactoserum. You should repeat this until the bottle is full.

When the bottle is almost full, it is important to press the compost with a plastic bag. This will decrease its contact with oxygen. At last, you should close the lid of thermos tightly, wait for 15 days before burying under the soil. The ideal temperature for compost is 21-37 degrees.
